From now children need their own passport when traveling abroad. Due to European regulations the German passport law is changed. As of 26 June 2012 the entries of children in the parent’s passport becomes invalid and shall the child is not allowed to cross the border.

From that day, children must have their own travel document when traveling abroad.

This also applies to travel within the EU or within the Schengen area. For some countries an own identity card is enough. The child’s passport requires a biometric photo of the child. The child’s passport is valid for six years and may be extended until the child is twelve years old. It costs 13 €.
